At Schøyens gate 10, in Trondheim, a large public mural with golden curving lines crossing a central circle shimmers in the changing light. The mural draws from the legacy of Norwegian mathematician Niels Henrik Abel (1802-1829), whose pioneering research in mathematics has contributed to a deeper understanding of the world today. Starting from the street festival Levende Abelsgate in 2021, with community outreach, discussions, research and presentations, the mural reflects the processes of building bridges and connections, seeking to reflect in some way the complexities of the local environment through artistic means: from the expansion plans of NTNU, the vitality of the green space in the city, and the identity and life of the community itself. The approximately 12m tall x 10m wide mural is made from imitation gold leaf applied individually onto the textured surface of rock panels encasing the building structure. Over time, it, too, will change, forming a patina from the weather and reflecting the light throughout the seasons.
